Project 4: Kostabi's Life Lessons
Students will engage in discussion about Mark Kostabi, a modern painter who hires people to complete the process of his work. Kostabi hires people to think of the ideas, hires people to paint them, and has a TV show where people compete to name them. In the end he signs the work and sells it for thousands of dollars. Does this make Mark Kostabi an artist or a fraud? Students will use gesture drawing to create human figures with correct proportion. In their drawings students will communicate a life lesson that they live by. Pastel will be used to shade the figures in Kostabi’s “everyman” style with a shadow, highlight, and medium value.
