Flying kites on All Saints Day is a rich tradition of Guatemala. People sometimes spend months making kites that will be connect them with their ancestors on November 1st. After learning about the tradition and purpose of the kites, each class will create their own large kite.In preparation, I drew a large kite, cut it into pieces, and assembled the bamboo structure. Each student will receive a piece of the kite to collage artifacts that describe their heritage. In preparation for creating a balanced composition, students will practice the six Tools of Composition: rule of 3rds, overlapping, odd numbers, going off the page, center of interest, and repetition. These tools must be used as they tell their story about who they are and where they came from: their heritage, ancestors, traditions, and culture.
