Project 2: Coiled Clay Pottery
A coiled pot can be a metaphor for growing and learning. One first builds the base. It must be thick and sturdy to support the rest of the pot. Slowly, one coil at a time, it spirals up. One coil must be in place before the next can be attached. Patience and practice are necessary for building pots, just as it is important for growing and learning. Whenever a student writes a paper he or she must have a good base of knowledge. A strong foundation of family and friends are essential for growing up. Little steps must be made in life before other things can be accomplished.
We will also be looking at other methods that are used to build pottery. Students will learn that there is no “right” answer and there are many ways to approach the same problem. Pueblo Indians have lost much of their culture, but we can learn a lot about them by looking at what they have created. We will examine how the shape of their pots determine what they are used for. In their work, students will also have to consider form and function. This will allow the students to consider the function of their pot and the additions that might enhance that.
